Most people I speak with, friends and customers, seem to be of a mindset that we are at a crisis point. Financially and on other ways, i.e. immigration, Ebola, international conflict most seem to think we are on the brink catclysm.
However the power brokers in DC, and the media elite act and speak as if there is no crisis, that the great danger has been obviated and we are growing and succeeding.
The difference, I think is exactly the DC connection. Those in DC, and those connected to it are in a truly different world. Washington has just been the beneficiary of the largest tax revenue ever received in the history of our nation. Government, the source of their power, revenue and livelihood has grown vastly more in size and in power and reach into the lives of those who are now no longer merely constituents but increasingly serfs of the rulers who occupy DC.
Of course, they think there is no crisis. The central power has grown, the revenue received by Leviathan flows steadily and with greater volume that ever before.
Those on the bottom of this pyramid are increasingly crushed by the burden of providing the revenue to maintain the lifestyle of their rulers.
Average Americans are working more, (note the vastly improved worker efficiency ratings in the last decade) and working harder than ever before and yet reaping less and less from their labor as their income stream is diverted to fulfill the goals and promises of a ruling class that is increasingly detached from those whose wealth they plunder.
One of the major themes economists have pounded again and again is that inflation has been almost non-existent during the current administration. This is technically correct.
The dirty secret is that the Treasury Department and the BLS calculate inflation only after REMOVING the prices of food and fuel.
So, if you don’t have to go anywhere, or eat anything, inflation is manageable.
When Obama took office, the press were beating up on the previous administration because he had ‘permitted the price of gasoline to skyrocket”. We were paying $1.89 per gallon then. We are currently celebrating that gasoline has dropped to at or below $3.00 per gallon in many years.
So, individuals are indeed being squeezed. Yet the ruling clique in DC continues to crow that they have made life better for us and they have fixed the problems.
Well, I guess if you live in a protected velvet lined castle, insulated from the effects of the destructive policies you repeat over and over I guess you would eventually believe there is not a dangerous world out there.
